Science teaching has a very good health and safety record. Nevertheless, science teachers must comply with health andsafety legislation as there are many hazardous chemicals, living organisms, pieces of equipment and procedures in use in school laboratories. There are many pitfalls to trap the unwary, particularly newly-qualified science teachers. As well as knowing how to work safely, new teachers also have to develop the skills needed to run a successful practical lesson. As part of the course we will consider what this means and offer suggestions and tips based on new CLEAPSS publications. Course led by Matt Endean.

CLEAPSS Safety with Chemicals for Technicians

The main emphasis of this course is on management issues and risk assessment. The day will include input from the trainer, discussion, and a variety of activities intended to enhance understanding of the legislative framework and how it applies in schools, especially risk assessment. Common and not so common, but more serious, accidents which occur in school science will be examined along with a discussion of the implications for management. There will be plenty of opportunities for participants to identify their own areas of concern. Suitable for: Heads of Department, their deputies and those aspiring to the post. As well as knowing how to work safely, new teachers also have to develop the skills needed to run a successful practical
lesson. As part of the course we will consider what this means and offer suggestions and tips based on new CLEAPSS publications.

CLEAPSS Supporting Safe and Successful Classroom Physics

In 1977, Bourdieu’s book Reproduction in Education, Society and Culture appeared in English translation. It became a seminal text in the radical ‘New Sociology of Education’, which was announced with the collection Knowledge and Control (1972), to which Bourdieu also contributed two articles.

With a new accent on language, the construction of Classroom Knowledge and the role that Cultural Capital played in reproducing class hierarches, a new focus for educational research opened up. Consequent methodological innovations included ethnography, reflexivity, action research, and case study, etc. This research seminar examines and reassesses Reproduction and its main message 50 year later. It addresses its influence and the subsequent backlash against the research approaches it fostered. It finally returns to Bourdieu’s early work with ethnographies in France and North Africa in order to situate Reproduction in his oeuvre, to argue that key aspects of it were misinterpreted, and its potential left unrealised.

The talk addresses how education policies alone struggle to reduce educational disparities with respect to both school socio-economic segregation and social mobility. This work suggests that understanding the complex interaction between structural economic inequalities, individual motives and education policy is crucial for meaningful educational reform and social mobility.

Increasing risk of extreme weather events is impacting all sectors including education, yet little is currently known about how schools are responding. In this seminar, I will report on an exploratory survey of how school staff are adapting to climate change, using the protective action decision model to understand the barriers and enablers to action on extreme heat. The seminar will examine the tensions between school policy and staff autonomy that currently act as impediments to low cost adaptation methods and explore the implications for school leadership teams, professional organisations and policy-makers. The findings strengthen the calls for quality climate education, and specifically the need to prioritise climate adaptation education for school leaders.</content_snippet>
