Psychologists have proposed that humans have an "Approximate NumberSytem" (ANS) that has an important role in mathematics learning and performance. I will present data from a series of experiments with children and adults that demonstrate the situations in which the ANS is, and is not, related to an individual's maths performance. I will show that our understnading of the ANS, and the tasks designed to measure it, are far from complete.

Speaker information

Dr Camilla Gilmore , Maths Education Centre, Loughborough University. Dr Camilla Gilmore says of her research 'My research concerns the systems and processes that underlie numerical and mathematical abilities in adults and children. More specifically I am interested in: The Approximate Number System (ANS) in adults and children. Domain specific and domain general influences on the development of mathematics ability. Mathematical learning difficulties and dyscalculia. Children’s conceptual understanding of arithmetic. Using cognitive psychology research to support effective mathematics education.'
