The academic arms race: Seminar

International rankings form an important input into the positional competition for ‘world-class’ universities. The session draws on institutional field theories in discussing international rankings in times of global educational expansion and inter-connectedness: how they are socially constructed, provide means for creating social order in international mass higher education, an arena for contestation about the criteria for success and legitimacy, and related governmental policies and organisational strategies.
