The Grammar of the Education Video: Putting pedagogy before production value. Seminar

Date:
2 November 2017
Venue:
University of Southampton School of Education

Event details

The use of video in the classroom has increased dramatically in the last decade and has been the attention of a significant amount of research. However, while the pedagogical use of video within a lesson has been explored, what is missing is a focus on the pedagogy within the video. Generally videos are evaluated by their production values – high production values are those that adopt traditional filmic or broadcast television production styles. There is a focus on creative photographic techniques, and editing principles designed to tell stories and entertain. Low production videos are videos that do not adopt the ‘higher’ standard. However these high production values were not developed with education or learning in mind rather they were developed to maximize entertainment value. This session will synthesis the range of videos, textbooks and academic literature in an attempt to identify suitable pedagogical principles for the production of videos in education.
