Event details

A critical analysis of special and inclusive education in Singapore based on western assumptions.

What is your talk about? I shall describe and critically analyse special and inclusive education in Singapore based on my western assumptions. This will include the presentation of research studies and other scholarly work on the attitudes of Singaporean teachers towards students with SEND, the role of allied educators who provide learning and behaviour support to these students in mainstream schools, and other types of support that are currently provided within schools.

What are the key messages of your talk? I would like to highlight that local cultures cannot always follow recommendations from international organisations especially when these recommendations are in direct conflict with the cultural notions into which they are interjected.

What are the implications for practice or research from your talk? I shall discuss the policies and practices that could be further developed or established to enhance the quality of education of students with SEND in Singaporean mainstream schools.
