Event details

Microgenetic studies involve highly-concentrated observation of learners’ behaviour within short periods of time, aiming at capturing change in learning as it occurs. This paper presents analysis of data from two qualitative microgenetic studies with 5-6 year old children solving an additive task and 9-10 year old children solving fraction problems. Focusing on phases when children’s task performance remains unchanged, the analysis reveals shifts related to what children attend to and how, when reporting on their solution over the course of five task-based interviews. The findings suggest that consistent delivery of the same type of solution (correct or incorrect) does not necessarily mean that learning is not growing. Microgenetic qualitative data can offer key insights and a nuanced understanding of hidden, often, dimensions of learning that are fundamental for fully comprehending what instructional conditions are most conducive to change for individual learners.
