Event details
What is your talk about? My talk is about radical democratic education in practice. I draw in particular on the work of Alex Bloom who, for 10 years after WW2 in one of the toughest areas of the East End of London, ran one of the most radical democratic secondary schools the UK has ever seen. I also draw on my own professional experience as a teacher working in pioneer radical comprehensive schools in the 1970s and 80s and then for the next 30 years as a university lecturer and researcher.
What are the key messages of your talk? Radical democratic education rests fundamentally on how we live and learn together on a daily basis. We must learn from this radical past if we are to create a more fulfilling future.
What are the implications for practice or research from your talk? There are, of course, many implications. Here I focus on how we can maintain our integrity as radical democratic educators in a public education system that is largely preoccupied with other priorities.
