Research indicates that high performing education systems invest in, value, develop and respect the education profession. Prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic, many countries were interested in moving towards a professionally-led education system which prioritizes the work of the education profession in leading educational improvement. The emergency response to the pandemic has disrupted the work of the education profession and the nature of educational leadership and change. This talk draws on research to consider the nature of a professionally-led education system pre-pandemic, shifts during the pandemic, and possibilities for post-pandemic times.

Investing in, valuing, developing and respecting the education profession is vital for educational improvement. The impact of the global pandemic has disrupted approaches to educational leadership and change, and the work of the education profession. It is time now to ensure that there is a priority focus on both students and the staff who work in education to lead the way forward for educational recovery during and post-pandemic.

Implications for practice include:
• Strategies for educational leadership, including system leadership, school leadership, and teacher leadership;
• Approaches to leadership and teacher development and professional learning;
• Identifying current priorities for supporting the education profession in order to support and serve students' learning, equity, health and well-being.
