Outreach activities with Schools and Colleges

All secondary PGCE programmes are actively involved in outreach activities as well as school placements which form part of the training.

Some examples are described below but new links and activities are being developed all the time; contact the Secondary PGCE programme director for further information.

Sixth form tutoring

Geography trainees work on a one-to-one basis with A2 geography students at Totton College to support and develop their report writing skills and their ability to use the internet effectively to research current material for geographical essays. Maths revision days and a puzzle day are run for local 6th form colleges.

Support for School Fieldwork

History and Geography trainees plan and support innovative fieldwork with pupils from Redbridge School. Pupils work in very small groups with trainee teachers to engage in practical fieldwork activities in Southampton and to discuss and present their findings to others in their school, including members of the management team.

Geography and Science trainees enable whole year groups to work in local environments. The high staff-pupil ratios make it possible to engage every pupil in practical and active work outside the classroom, providing personalised learning experiences.

Pupil visits to the university

Exciting enrichment experiences for pupils from partner schools in English, Mathematics and Geography aim to get pupils thinking 'outside of the box'. Pupils benefit by having targeted support that is progressive, creative and 'different'.

Pupils leave the university after these enrichment days more enthusiastic about the subject and with enhanced skills. Many also have their aspirations raised and consider university as an option in their future for the first time.

Pupil skills development in schools

Many schools benefit from swimming classes being taught by PE trainees with very individualized lessons and smaller teaching groups.
