Join us to hear more about how to promote fun and engaging environmental education activities at your school!
As future stewards of the planet, it is vital that today’s children understand about wildlife, climate change and sustainable development and engage in activities which help protect the environment.
We host termly network meetings to exchange ideas on how we can work more closely together in a sustainable way to promote environmental education and share best practice across Southampton’s primary and secondary schools. During our meetings, we have talks and activities from expert local environmental educators and are joined by teachers from many primary, and secondary schools across the Southampton region. Each meeting is hosted at a local venue, and we make a point of spending time outside to share some inspiring activities, which can be readily used in school and linked to the curriculum.
We have a termly newsletter which includes local news, events, and funding opportunities all related to environmental education. To join the mailing list please email EducationKEE@soton.ac.uk. You can also use this email address to request a list of previous sessions hosted if you would like to know more.
The Schools Environmental Education Network (SEEN) brings together researchers, teachers, parents and policy stakeholders with an interest in promoting environmental education and sustainability. Our aim is to engage and support young people to become confident, active environmental citizens within their schools and local communities.
Our members include key representatives from many local organisations such as Eco Schools, Freshwater Habitats Trust, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Learning Through Landscapes, Ministry of Eco Education, New Forest National Park Authority, Southampton City Council, Southampton National Park City, Sholing Valley Study Centre, Friends of Peartree Green, Winchester Science Centre, Winchester Cathedral Big Local and the University of Southampton.
SEEN was initiated by Professor Marcus Grace and Dr Andri Christodoulou in 2022 and supported initially by funding from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Southampton.
Prior to the launch of SEEN we collaborated with a number of primary schools across Southampton in designing and delivering an outdoor Wild Citizens programme (funded by PERU, University of Southampton). Children explored their school grounds, discussed, decided and implemented interventions to enhance the biodiversity of their school’s grounds, and took part in activities where they were able to communicate their findings. During this project we found there was demand to foster a community of like-minded professionals to share environmental education best practice in schools, so we launched SEEN.
