PhD research topic:
Interdisciplinary collaboration for the inclusion of children with severe learning difficulties in early years settings in England.
PhD research outline:
The Children and Families Act 2014 proposed a person-centred and joined-up provision for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Its introduction of EHCPs encouraged a more holistic and timely response of services and the acknowledgment of students’ educational, health and care needs as interdependent entities. Moreover, with the SEND Code of Practice, interdisciplinary collaboration became a legal obligation. English Local Authorities are now responsible for a strong collaborative synthesis and delivery of the EHCPs among various agencies. Different professionals are recognised as partners who must commit jointly to the support of children with SEND, in a wider context of limited funding and financial austerity.
Angeliki's focus specifically on children with severe learning difficulties is informed by the scarce research on their inclusion in mainstream education, and more specifically in early years. Her aim is to investigate how interdisciplinary collaboration enables these children to be included, using a Critical Communicative Methodology. The research findings will inform current practice with case examples of how educational and social inclusion can be best achieved for a group that has attracted little research attention. Aneliki aspires that her research will also equip policy-makers, practitioners and professionals with actions plans to facilitate inclusive practices and ensure optimal academic and social outcomes for children with SLD.
