Dr Zhenzhen Miao is Postgraduate research student within Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton.

Passionate about education in general and mathematics teaching in specific, Zhenzhen recently completed a PhD from the University under the supervision of Professor David Reynolds. Zhenzhen's PhD project focuses on the effectiveness of mathematics teaching (EMT) in primary schools in England and China. The EMT project builds on decades of research on effective maths teaching, updates the field with cross-national data and findings and has generated much publicity since the 2014 BERA press release. In her MA dissertation, Zhenzhen compared the geometry curriculum of England and China under the supervision of Keith Jones. Before studying in Southampton, Zhenzhen had ten years' work experience in China, first as a maths and English teacher and then a translator/interpreter. During the later stage of her PhD, she had also worked as a research assistant to the improving children's mathematical reasoning project in Aberdeen.

Now in a transitional period post-PhD, Zhenzhen is working as a part-time lecturer on the initial teacher education (ITE) programme (4 years, BA) at the Institute of Education Science, Luoyang Normal University, close to her hometown in China. After six years' postgraduate study, Zhenzhen cherishes the opportunity to teach again and enjoys co-ordinating the three ITE modules: 1) Problem Solving and Practice of Mathematics, 2) Designing and Organising TEFL Games and 3) Education Literature Published in English. She throws herself heartily to the preparation of every session so that her teaching could optimise trainee teachers' development both professionally and morally towards good teachers. Deep down she feels this is all she can do in her position today to ensure thousands (she has 200+ students in Semester 1, 2016-17) of children's education be in safe hands tomorrow.
