Research project: Cultural rules and uses of written numerals in children’s everyday environments

Currently Active:
Yes

This research, funded by The Leverhulme Trust (Ref: RPG-2019-330), will employ qualitative methods and participatory data-collection tools to trace and analyse preschool children’s understanding of the cultural rules that govern the use of written numbers in everyday contexts, alongside the development of their own mathematical notations, longitudinally, over their transition from preschool to Reception.

Dates: February 2021 – March 2023

The outcomes will be important for education practitioners who need to be aware of the varied cultural understandings of written numerals that children bring with them to school, and build on this knowledge, in order to help children make meaningful connections between their existing (informal) and new (formal) knowledge of number.
