System instructional leadership for collaborative partnerships for school-to-school improvement within emerging Multi- academy Trusts (MATs)’. Researchers: Maria Kaparou and Daniel Muijs – University of Southampton (Ethics number: 21962).

The purpose of this project is to investigate the nature of system instructional leadership for a collaborative self-improving system in emerging Multi-academy Trusts (MATs) in England. Within this framework, the research:

  • examines the nature of system leadership for capacity building within emerging MATs;
  • explores the ways in which potential new MATs are being formed and developed;
  • examines the most effective instructional leadership practices enacted by the leaders of emerging MATs to strengthen a self-improving school-led system;
  • unpacks the challenges faced by newly-formed MATs;
  • identifies the impact of system instructional leadership within the framework of Multi-academy Trusts.

This study will contribute to the understanding of professional knowledge and of the leadership practices enacted to lead a collaborative self-improving system.
