Dr Alex Woodgate-Jones BA, MA, PhD, PGCE
Senior Teaching Fellow
Dr Alex Woodgate-Jones is a Senior Teaching Fellow within Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton.
Before working at Southampton, Alex spent several years teaching in a school in the Basque country which sparked an ongoing interest in teaching and learning. Having returned to the UK, she subsequently taught in primary schools in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Swindon, as classteacher and literacy coordinator. She currently works predominantly on the BSc in Education studies and the Primary PGCE programmes (as lead tutor on the Teaching and Learning and Assignments aspects). She has reviewed papers for several journals including Teaching and Teacher Education , Language Learning and Journal of Education for Teaching , and has completed several research projects funded by the TDA (related to teaching trainee teachers).
The subject of her PhD was the introduction of the modern foreign language initiative into primary schools in England, with an emerging focus on the teachers’ voices and their responses to imposed change. She is particularly interested in how the notion of professionalism for teachers has changed and how the voices of the teachers themselves could and should be better heard.
