Professor Lianghuo Fan is Distinguished Professor and Director for the Asian Centre for Mathematics Education at East China Normal University.
Professor Lianghuo Fan held a Personal Chair in Education at the University of Southampton. He completed his undergraduate study in mathematics at Ningbo Normal College (now Ningbo University), China, his MSc as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in mathematics education and mathematical history at East China Normal University, Shanghai, and his doctorate in education at the University of Chicago, USA. He also holds a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from SIM University, Singapore.
Since 1981, Professor Fan has been a mathematics teacher, a mathematics and science department head in high schools, and later a lecturer in a teacher’s college in China for about ten years. Since 1998, Professor Fan was on the faculty of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, before he joined Southampton’s School of Education in 2010.
Professor Fan has a broad and interdisciplinary interest in research areas, including (1) mathematics teaching, learning, and assessment, (2) teacher professional development, (3) mathematics curriculum studies and textbook development, (4) international and comparative education, (5) education policy and sociology, and (6) algorithm of polynomial algebra. He has a wide range of publications in these areas. Over the recent years, Professor Fan has conducted several important research projects. He was the founding principal investigator and currently a collaborator of a major research project, the Singapore Mathematics Assessment and Pedagogy Project (SMAPP) with a total grant of over 1 million Singapore dollars.
Professor Fan has extensive international experience in mathematics curriculum studies and textbook development. He was on the development team of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project, a consultant for both primary and secondary mathematics textbooks published by Shinglee Publishers in Singapore, and currently is Editor-in-Chief of two latest series of mathematics textbooks in Singapore by Multimedia Publications, and China by Zhejiang Education Publishing House, respectively. He was chief organizer of the Forum for All Chinese Mathematics Educators of the 9th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-9, 2000), co-chair of the organizing team for Discussion Group on Mathematics Textbooks of ICME-10 (2004), and co-chair for Discussion Group on Curriculum Reform of ICME-11 (2008). From 2000 to 2006, he also served on the International Programme Committee of the 13th International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) Study on mathematics education in different cultural traditions.
Professor Fan was Chief Editor of The Mathematics Educator (2006-2010), a research journal by the Association of Mathematics Educators, Singapore. Since 2004, he has also served on the Editorial Board of Journal of Mathematics Education, published in China, and since 2007 on the International Advisory Board of Research in Mathematics Education published in the UK. Since 2008, he has served as external examiner for the MSc in Mathematics Education programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Fan has also served as consultant/advisor to governmental and private organizations in mathematics education in a number of countries/regions including Hong Kong, Singapore, Qatar, USA, and most frequently, Mainland China.
