Information for assessors

If you are a study needs assessor writing an assessment report for a student applying for Disabled Students’ Allowances, the information you require is on this page.

For information about University of Southampton courses, please search the University website for undergraduate or postgraduate course details. You can find contact details for academic units and staff on our website.
The Student Disability and Inclusion team has an in-house support worker service for the supply of non-medical helpers, such as learning support assistants. Non-medical helpers are employed on contract or work with the service on a consultancy basis, depending on role. Training is provided and all non-medical helpers have enhanced DBS certificates. The service is reviewed annually and work is monitored and evaluated to ensure that students receive the best possible service.

The University of Southampton uses external suppliers on a case-by-case basis for support services that cannot be provided in-house. Suppliers are researched for the provision of high quality, cost-effective support. These may include BSL or a language support tutor for deaf students.

Specialist Study Skills (Specific Learning Differences)

The University of Southampton can provide short-term specialist study skills support from the Student Disability and Inclusion team. However, we encourage students to apply for DSA for longer-term specialist study skills where eligible to allow them to access support for the duration of their course.

Short-term mentoring

The University of Southampton can provide short-term mentoring to students and this is reviewed on an individual basis. However, we encourage and support students to apply for DSA for longer-term mentoring support where eligible to allow them to access support for the duration of their course.

Assistive Technology

The University of Southampton provides access to a range of assistive technology.  The majority of this is available to all students on university computers. Some specialist software is available to students accessing long-term support through the Student Disability and Inclusion team.
The University of Southampton regularly reviews the software it invests in; for this reason we cannot guarantee a student access to a certain piece of software for the duration of their course.
We encourage and support students who are eligible to apply for individual licences through the DSA, this allows them to access assistive technology software for the duration of their course on their own devices.
For information on the software available, visit our Assistive Technology webpage.

If you need further information about a specific student accessing support through the Student Disability and Inclusion team, please contact us and we will be happy to help. Discussion of a student's needs with an assessment centre or independent assessor requires the student's consent.
