Ways we support you

We provide access to many kinds of support for students who may be experiencing a mental health problem. When appropriate, we may advise you to contact a service provided through the NHS, while in others cases we will suggest support provided through the University.


We take confidentiality extremely seriously, and the information you give us is handled sensitively and would only be shared on a need to know basis within the University. We do not disclose information about students to third parties. You can discuss confidentiality further over the phone or with a member of the team when you come to a drop-in session or appointment.


Many people benefit from a self-help approach and there are excellent resources available by exploring the tabs at the top of the page. If you are unsure of what would be helpful, the Enabling Services Advisors can signpost you towards high quality, evidence-based information about common problems.

If self-help does not fully resolve the difficulty, you can contact us to explore further options.

First Support

First Support are a small team based in the Student Services Centre (Building 37) who provide support to students who may be facing significant difficulties in their life or dealing with a crisis. The team offer appointments face-to-face, via the telephone or by Skype; they can be contacted during office hours by calling +44(0)23 8059 7488 or emailing


Issues in your life at University may impact your ability to study and achieve your potential. A short course of counselling may be available to support you through the challenging times. Counselling is an opportunity for you to discuss any concerns or issues you may have in a supportive and safe environment and your counsellor will work with you to help you understand what is going on for you and to find a positive way forward. The University Counselling Service offers short-term counselling – the number of sessions will be agreed between you and your counsellor.

The University offers short-term hypnotherapy sessions for students and is particularly suited to students experiencing high levels of anxiety, though is also effective for a variety of other conditions and symptoms. To learn more about hypnotherapy click here.

Hypnotherapy is fast, effective and long lasting. It is entirely natural and has only positive side effects. Hypnotherapy improves mood, enhances positive outlook, improves motivation and increases energy.We must ensure that this type of support is the most suitable for you so if you are interested in counselling, please contact Enabling Services on or come along to a Drop-In session for a triage assessment form.

Workshops and Mindfulness

We provide a variety of workshops that offer practical tips and advice as well as a chance to understand more about common problems. We also run a Mindful Friday group where students can come along to take part in a Mindfulness practice. Each year we run a number of 8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction courses – email for more information.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Steps to Wellbeing service is a self-referral NHS service available to people who are registered with a Southampton GP, and offers evidence-based treatments for mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Similar services such as iTalk and Talking Change are available in surrounding areas and across the country.


If you are unsure whether we can help you, you may wish to come to a Drop-In session for an informal chat with an Advisor. At a Drop-In session, you need only disclose what you are comfortable with, as the Advisor will not carry out a lengthy assessment.

Drop-In sessions are normally between 1pm and 3pm every day during term time, and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays outside term, except when the University is closed.
