Staying Well Over Easter Break!

As the Easter break gets underway, changes to routine, approaching deadlines and exams could be leaving you feeling a little uneasy. However, it is important to remember to use some of this time as a break, look after yourself and remember that there is support available wherever you are. Local charity Touch Network have been completing a survey about what helps people who live in Southampton to have better days. They had a great response rate and have analysed their results using the New Economics Foundation (NEF) ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’. Evidence has suggested that building the following five actions into your day-to-day life is important for overall wellbeing:

Connect…..With the people around you.  Building connections with those around you, whether at home, at University or in your local community will support and enrich you every day.

Be active…..Go outside; go for a run, walk or cycle.  Dance, play a game or attend a class.  Try to find a physical activity that you enjoy and that suits your current level of mobility and fitness.

Take notice…..Be more aware of the world around you and what you are feeling.  Notice the changing seasons and what is happening around you.  Reflecting on your experiences will help you to appreciate what really matters to you.

Keep learning…..Sign up for a course, try something new or revive an old passion.  Most importantly, set a challenge you will enjoy achieving and that is not focussed on your studies.  Learning new skills will help increase your confidence.

Give…..Do something nice for someone, it could be a friend, family member or a stranger.  Take up volunteering or join a community group.  This can be incredibly rewarding and helps create connections with the people around you.

Try to incorporate these five actions into your daily life and see what a positive impact this can have on your wellbeing.  Remember, it is all about balance!

Enabling Services are really interested to hear about what helps you have your best day.  After the Easter Vacation, we will have a board in the drop in waiting area for you to tell us what leads to your best day.  Please come along to Building 37 during drop in and let us know!

Enabling Services drop in is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 13:00-1500 during vacation time.  We will be closed with the University from 30th March- 5th April (inclusive).  On Monday 16th April, we return to term time opening of Monday-Friday 13:00-15:00.
