Keen to start the academic year with all the key skills you need to succeed?

Enabling Services have developed a series of small group workshops (designed for students with a specific learning difficulty, such as Dyslexia), that aim to cover the key areas many students find challenging such as: Understanding the assignment brief (Part A), critical reading and thinking (Part B) as well developing an academic style (Part C).

Students may choose to attend Parts A, B and C, however there is no requirement to attend all three sessions. Find out more about the content for each of the workshops in the series below:

Part A: The Assignment Brief

16/10/2019 and 12/11/2019

This workshop will introduce essay-writing skills. Topics covered will include tips for breaking down the title and understanding the task, as well as strategies for planning and structuring your essay. There will be opportunities to discuss your own experience or queries. If you are about to undertake your first assignment or need to understand the feedback on an assignment to try to improve your future marks, then this workshop can help you.

Part B: Critical Reading and Thinking

23/10/2019 and 19/11/2019

This workshop is designed to help you maximize the critical content within an assignment. We will discuss critical thinking, what it is and why it is important. We will demonstrate active and critical reading strategies to help reduce your workload by helping you get what you need from text in a way that is efficient, reducing the need to go back and re-read the text multiple times. There will be opportunities to ask questions related to your own work and share experiences with others, in a small, informal group setting.

Part C: Developing an Academic Style

30/10/2019 and 26/11/2019

This workshop is designed to review the academic essay structure and writing style. We will provide advice and basic guidelines on sentence length and content, together with paragraph structure in academic writing. We will demonstrate editing and proof reading strategies such as ‘Reverse Outline'. There will be opportunities to raise questions relating to your own work and and share your experiences with others.
