Registering to vote is quick and easy - it usually takes about five minutes. Find out more information below.

You can vote via one of three ways: in person, by proxy, or by post. The Students' Union have made a Frequently Asked Questions video about voting by proxy and voting by post.

The deadlines for registering to vote:

Register to vote on the GOV.UK website by 11:59pm on Tuesday 26th November to be able to vote in person in the General Election on 12th December 2019.

If you live in Southampton for University but would like to vote in your home constituency, you can vote by post. The deadline for this is 5pm on Tuesday 26th November. Your postal vote must then arrive at your Electoral Office in the UK by 10pm on Thursday 12th December.

If you will be away on polling day, if you have a medical issue or disability, or you aren't able to vote in person because of work or military service, you can apply for a proxy vote. You must apply for this by 5pm on Wednesday 4th December.

Voting in person if you're disabled

If you’re disabled, your local Electoral Registration Office can tell you about:

  • physical access, for example wheelchair ramps and disabled parking spaces
  • low-level polling booths
  • equipment for voters with a visual impairment

Every polling station must provide at least one large print display version of the ballot paper and a special tactile voting device (TVD) to help people with sight loss.

Would you like more information about the local candidates?

SUSU are hosting hustings events; candidates will come and talk about why they are running and answer questions so that you can make informed choices about who to vote for.
