Here are our top tips for staying well over the festive season

As the winter break approaches, you may feel a little anxious or stressed with planning to go home, changing your routine, and preparing for approaching exams and deadlines.

If the winter break feels stressful or causes you to worry, you could contact Student Life who will continue to be available to all University students 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the winter break, in person and by phone.
Alternatively, Samaritans are available 24/7 by phone and email or you can contact Shout by text on 85258 24/7.

Here are some tips from Enabling Services to help you feel positively about your holiday and start 2020 well.

Find a balance:

It is important to use some time for your studies but remember that it is a holiday and you need to look after yourself too!

Try writing a to do list for your revision and coursework. Break the list down into manageable chunks and prioritise the tasks you want to achieve the most.

Then, do the same for the fun things you want to do too! Need some ideas? You could:

·         Watch a festive film

·         Catch up with friends

·         Make the most of the daylight and go on a winter walk

·         Listen to a podcast for your wellbeing

·         Spend time with your family

·         Go ice skating

Have realistic expectations:
Having huge expectations for the festive period can sometimes lead to disappointment. Try not to compare yourself and your winter break to other people on social media; remember that what you see on social media may not be a true representation of someone's life.

Make sure that your expectations of yourself are realistic too: it's fine to say no to some plans if you're not feeling up to it, and remember to schedule breaks into your revision and work too - nobody can work for hours at a time!

Get enough sleep:
The winter break is a great time to get some rest, which can be beneficial for your studies too! Getting enough sleep can improve your focus and efficiency, and it also helps the new information you have learned that day to settle in your brain!

If you would like information on healthy sleeping patterns, try our online workshop called Getting a Good Night’s Sleep. It takes around 20 minutes to complete and you can go at your own pace, wherever you like.
