It is important to recognise that finding it difficult to settle in, or feeling homesick is normal and happens to everyone at some point, regardless of what year of university you are in, whether you are a student from the UK or an international student.

Going to university is a big step which often involves moving away from home - possibly for the first time - or maybe after a long break spending time with your friends and family. This academic year will be different to the university life you have been used to, or what you were expecting it to be like, and this may add to you feeling like you're not quite settled in yet.

Below are some tips to help you cope with homesickness:

Self-help

Take a look at our online resources to help you cope with homesickness here. This useful booklet contains information about what homesickness is, facts and myths about homesickness, and strategies for helping yourself. You could also look at the NHS self-help leaflet on low mood to help you find techniques to look after your wellbeing.

Get connected

It is understandable that you might feel concerned about having opportunities to socialise whilst following the government guidelines. Student Minds have created a section on their Student Space, dedicated to information about the social side of university during the pandemic, including tips from students.

There are lots of online events you can participate in. Why not join one of the University’s clubs and societies? There are over 300 to choose from, so you can find something you like and meet new people! Take a look at this webpage for more information.

It might also be helpful for you to follow University services and departments on social media so that you feel connected with the University community. Read more about this on SUSSED.

Talk to someone

The Student Life team are available to talk to 24/7 and they can help you to settle into university and signpost you to additional support if necessary.

You could also text the Student Space's 24 hour text support line if you would like to talk to a trained volunteer confidentially.
