Prion decontamination

The environmental healthcare unit works on a number of collaborations developing new prion detection methods used to analyse and produce novel prion decontamination technologies.

The EHU are currently working in collaboration with 2 other universities in UK and a research facility in France on two separate prion decontamination projects. The first deals with new alloy coatings for surgical instruments to reduce adhesion of contaminants, especially prion amyloid; the second is the assessment of a new plasma technology for the decontamination of reusable surgical instruments.
