About the Showcase

Our 2013 Research Showcase will be held on Thursday 2 May 2013 in Garden Court (Highfield Campus).

This high profile University event will give second, third and fourth year postgraduate researchers an opportunity to:

  • present their research to the University community;
  • practise communicating about their research to a non-expert audience;
  • discover more about the research being undertaken by their peers;
  • network with other postgraduates and university staff;
  • win a cash prize for best poster design!

The posters will be grouped within these broad themes:

  • Sustainability
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Policy
  • Theory
  • Technology
  • People

Winners of gold and silver prizes receive a considerable cash prize!  After the event, they are required to do a five minute presentation of their poster on camera.

To take part in the Showcase:

If you would like to present a poster please complete and return the abstract proforma by Friday 15 March 2013,  by e-mailing an electronic copy to: rdgc@soton.ac.uk.   Please note that this deadline has been extended from 1 March.

Please note that your abstract and poster should describe your research in a way that can be understood by NON-SPECIALISTS.  Our judges will be assessing your poster against the following criteria:

  • Accessibility to a lay audience

  • Eye-catching layout and design

  • Concise presentation of material (text/figs)

  • Clear organisation

  • Importance of research contribution

So make sure you have addressed this in the way you design and present your poster, to ensure your research is presented to best effect for a non-expert audience.

Printing costs will be covered by the Researcher Development & Graduate Centre; more information on this and other arrangements for the event will be sent to all participants in due course.

A buffet is served after prize giving.
