Hi, I'm Liz Williams and I studied PhD Environmental Sciences within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

Southampton doesn’t just churn out students with a degree; it gives you the capability to stand on your own two feet with applicable skills to start a career and the contacts to get one.

I am currently working on a PhD in Environmental Science. Having completed Biology, Chemistry and Geography A-Levels I wanted to complete a degree which allowed me to combine my interest in science and fieldwork so decided to study Marine Environmental Science at Portsmouth University, graduating with a 2:1. After working in London for a year I stumbled across the University of Southampton website and found the MRes course in Coastal Engineering for Climate Change. While I was impressed by the University facilities such as the bars and boats, the friendliness of the staff and the success of students after the course encouraged me to apply. My MRes project focused on Salt Marsh and Mudflat Change on Southampton Water and enabled me to work with a range of people across the university, from the Highfield Campus to the Channel Coastal Observatory and industry including Associated British Ports. My current PhD is now looking at Salt Marsh Change along the South Coast of England. The things I have enjoyed about studying at Southampton have been:
