Hi, I'm Nicola Beveridge and I studied MEng Aeronautics and Astronautics within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

Studying here enabled me to focus on the subject areas I was most interested in. This flexibility and the University’s great reputation helped me to start a career in my chosen industry.

What do you do?

Based near Rome, I am part of the launch vehicle team working towards the qualification flight of the ESA Vega launch vehicle. I have assisted in the development of a measurement plan, identifying critical moments during the launch for the entire launch vehicle, and am also involved with the solid rocket motor development.

What's the best part of your job?

Working in an international environment, on a project that genuinely interests me. I am living in a different culture, learning a new language and being trained as an engineer – I always have something to do! I can watch live transmission of all the European launches and space broadcasts. I also get to watch and listen to the test firings of the engines I am working on with the rest of my team. These events remind us of what we are all working towards – it never feels like I am doing unimportant work.

Why did you go into this career?

Working in the space industry has been the only career I ever really considered – and I have never regretted it!

What is your education/experience?

Up to age of 16 : 10 GCSEs (A–C). After 16 : A levels, and several weeks of work experience in a wide range of industries - this really helped me identify what I was really interested in. Then the Engineering Foundation Year at University of Southampton.

Any advice on getting the first job?

I applied online through the ESA careers website and was called for interview three months later. About six weeks after the interview, I was offered the job.

Why did you choose Southampton?

Southampton offered a great deal of flexibility in the engineering degrees and a wide range of projects, so I could personalise my studies to match my interests.

What was the best part about studying at Southampton?

The general modules meant you were always mixing with people from other engineering disciplines. You got the chance to experience other aspects of engineering without losing your own speciality.

Studying here enabled me to focus on the subject areas I was most interested in. This flexibility and the University's great reputation helped me to start a career in my chosen industry.

What is your advice to potential students?

Do as much work experience as possible. Not only will it boost your application, it will help you discover what you really enjoy doing.

What are your hobbies?

Hiking, travelling, photography
