Mr Alastair McDonald ARB RIBA FHEA FRSA
Director of Design Education

Alastair is the Director of Design Education within the School of Engineering, Programme Lead of the Civil Engineering and Architecture course, and Director of the Design Show.
Innovative engineering graduates are central to developing sustainable solutions for our societies and environments.
He joined the University of Southampton having previously worked as an architect in professional practice, having held Associate and Project Architect positions on a wide range of projects varying in scale of development, type of construction, procurement procedures used, and for both public and private sectors. Projects have included private and social housing, retail, restaurants, cultural buildings, infrastructure and master-planning. He has undertaken Client Advisory work and detailed design within the education sector.
He studied Architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, gaining RIBA Parts I, II and III. He is ARB registered and a chartered member of the RIBA. Specific areas of interest include the development of the processes of modelling, prototyping and fabrication in the realisation of successful design. He has organised and been involved in a number of speculative full scale design and construct projects intended to extend learning and foster innovative working relationships.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, and a member of the OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations) Design, Technology & Engineering Consultative Forum.
Alastair was awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award in 2015, the IStructE Excellence in Structural Engineering Education Award in 2018 and an Erskine Teaching Fellowship to the University of Canterbury, New Zealand in 2018.
