Research interests

Development and characterization of novel load-bearing and multifunctional materials, including:

  • Bio-inspired materials,
  • cellular and porous materials,
  • sandwich structures,
  • self-healing materials,
  • and biomaterials.

Biological material systems found in the natural world can exhibit exceptional combinations of mechanical properties (e.g. strength & toughness, and strength & low-density) and multifunctional capabilities (e.g. healing of damage, and growth/adaptation to environmental conditions) that can often be attributed to the way in which the constituents are assembled and organized across multiple length scales, rather than the chemical composition alone. I am interested in the development and characterization of synthetic materials that mimic the salient features of these natural materials in order to achieve similar properties and/or capabilities, with an emphasis on the mechanical behaviour of materials for structural, load-bearing applications.
