Dr. Baris Dogru is working as a visiting researcher within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Considering the availability of fossil fuels reserves, there will be no significant shortage of fossil resources over the next 30 years, but it is thought that these resources will be significantly reduced in the next 40-50 years, especially due to the increase in population.

Dr. Baris Dogru received his BSc and MSc degrees in 2005 and 2007 from Yildiz Technical University and Istanbul Technical University, respectively. He completed his PhD at Istanbul Technical University in 2015 and has been working as an Assistant Professor Doctor in Halic University since 2016. He joined Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, University of Southampton as a visiting researcher in 2016.

His research experience is focused on internal combustion engine performance, exhaust emissions, test bench installation, engine tests, combustion indicating and thermodynamic cycle analysis, alternative fuels, 1-D internal combustion engine modelling and analysis and engine control unit design. He has acted as researcher in many national, international, inter-university, scientific research and University-Industry Collaboration Projects.

He was awarded a one year scholarship to carry on his Postdoctoral study at University of Southampton by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) He is currently working in a control oriented engine modelling research project under supervision of Prof. Roberto Lot and Dr. Ranga Dinesh Kahanda Koralage.

Abstract:

Optimal control of internal combustion engine (ICE) power stroke is one of the key factors for reducing fuel consumption and regulated pollution emissions. The low efficiency problem is a significant issue for modern-day spark ignition (SI) engines considering the usage of cars in urban traffic and also at part load conditions and idling. In addition, fuel consumption (FC) and engine exhaust emission tendency dramatically deteriorates in low efficiency engine operation. This work investigates the performance maximizing of a static engine map in order to optimize the engine input variables with regards to a target power demand. Firstly, a Mean Value Engine Model (MVEM), simplifying the fast combustion characteristics as static effects and based on approaching one-dimensional gas dynamic analysis and average behaviour of the SI engine, is designed. Then numerical steady state lookup tables (engine maps) are optimised depending on the engine input parameters: throttle valve angle, spark timing and injection timing. The numerical results are compared and verified with the test bench outputs of 1.8 liters four-cylinder naturally aspirated SI engine for steady-state operation at part load conditions. The model based calibration results show that for an equivalent torque demand value, (Brake mean effective pressure: BMEP=1-2-3 bar and engine speed : n=1200-1350-1500-1650-1800 rpm) relative model prediction errors are on average under 1.6%, 0.28% and 16.9% for fuel consumption, nitrogen oxide (NOx) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, respectively. The present results show a promising direction to develop a control unit algorithm for dynamic engine modelling.
