Dr Jelili O Bello is a Senior Consultant (Abrasive and Erosive Wear) within the Enterprise Unit of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Dr Jelili Bello (JB) has been actively involved in the Surface Engineering and Tribology field since 1999. This has mainly involved experimental laboratory based work, as well as failure analysis of engineering components and devices. Over the past 12 years, JB has built up a wealth of experience in erosion and abrasion testing, and analysis of engineering surfaces. He is currently the project lead and senior consultant (abrasive and erosive wear) within nC2, one of the business units within the Faculty of Engineering & Environment Enterprise unit. JB also lead the hard copy material marketing for nC2.

Prior to joining nC2 in October 2015, JB worked as a consulting Engineer in the Research Institute for Industry (RIfI), also one of the business units in the Faculty of Engineering & Environment Enterprise unit. While working in RIfI, JB successfully completed over 90 industrially focused consultancy projects. He also worked for a year between 1998 and 1999 as a mechanical engineer in a manufacturing company, in Lagos, Nigeria, where his skills as a professional engineer was utilised.

JB has an experimental background from research conducted using polymeric coatings for protection of oil and gas pipelines and valves from corrosive environments. His research work has involved the design of bespoke coatings that protects engineering surfaces from corrosion and wear. This included evaluation and characterisation of the microstructure of the coatings relative to their mechanical and tribological properties, and the design of experiments to study their tribological performance. Prior to joining RIfI in 2006, JB spent two years as a visiting research fellow in the Surface Engineering and Tribology (SET) research group, at the University of Southampton. During this period, he conducted tribological research on other bulk engineering materials (metals and non-metals) particularly 304, 316 series and duplex stainless steels to better understand the synergistic effect of abrasion-corrosion on the tribological behaviour of stainless steel for oil and gas applications. JB’s other research interests include the design of smart coatings, self-healing/self-repairing coatings, environmentally friendly (non-toxic) coatings, for general surface engineering applications. JB has published 13 papers in archival journals and conference proceedings.
