Dr Daniel Wallace is an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Research Fellow within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton.

I was first exposed to the breadth and depth of acoustics whilst studying for my first degree in Acoustical Engineering at the University of Southampton. Throughout the MEng programme and whilst working in industrial placements, I learned that solving acoustical engineering problems often requires knowledge and techniques from several different fields of study.

This multidisciplinary approach was an essential for my PhD project, “Practical Audio System Design for Private Speech Reproduction”. During this project, I explored the constraints and challenges of producing private listening zones in public spaces, using a combination of computational modelling, acoustic signal processing, and subjective evaluation techniques. For a concise summary of this project, watch my award-winning Three Minute Thesis presentation.

Following the PhD, I was awarded an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship to further investigate how sound zoning systems can be designed and optimised for use in the context of shared transportation.

Throughout my career, I have been involved in designing, delivering and evaluating public engagement activities. As well as giving talks and tours to school-age children, I have designed a tabletop game to explain machine learning, an open-source loudspeaker array design for personal audio, and a Tablet PC-based activity to demonstrate several applications of sound zones.
