Dr Despoina Teli

Dr. Despoina Teli is a Visiting Academic in Energy and Sustainability within the Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. She obtained her first degree in Architecture in 2005 and a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture in 2007 from the Faculty of Engineering of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2013 she was awarded her PhD, which looked at thermal performance and occupant comfort in school buildings.

Despoina’s research interests are focused on understanding the relationships between buildings and their occupants, looking at thermal comfort and energy use. She is also interested in urban sustainable development and carbon performance in the built environment.

She has previously worked as a freelance and associate architect on numerous projects, specialising in bioclimatic design and sustainable urban development. Projects included offices, private houses commercial buildings and public open spaces. She has participated and been awarded prizes in design competitions.

My main research interests include the following topics:

  • Impact of user behaviour on energy consumption
  • Thermal comfort and adaptation in buildings and open spaces
  • Application of bioclimatic design principles to the built environment
  • Sustainable urban development
  • Open spaces and urban microclimate
