Gareth is a medical microbiologist working in the multidisciplinary Micro and Nano Therapies (MiNaTher) research team established by Dr Dario Carguo, which operates across the Bioengineering Science and Mechatronics research groups at the University of Southampton.
Gareth completed his BSc (Hons) in Human Biology in 2012 and attained an MSc with Distinction in Biomedical Science specialising in Medical Microbiology in 2017. Gareth completed his interdisciplinary PhD in Ultrasound-Mediated Therapies for the Treatment of Biofilms in Chronic Wound Infections in 2020, which involved key collaborative partners from Public Health England and the National Biofilms Innovation Centre. The aim of this research was to develop an ultrasound-responsive carrier for nitric oxide targeted to biofilms, which can induce both biological dispersal and mechanical elimination of biofilms and significantly enhance local drug uptake. In recognition of his research, he was awarded the EPSRC Doctoral Prize Research Fellowship to continue developments in this area. Gareth is currently collaborating on a number of research projects, which range from improving biofilm control strategies for medical devices to developing novel drug delivery methods for chronic diseases.
