Mrs Julia Kendal MSc MA(Cantab)
Sustainability Action Officer
Mrs Julia Kendal is the Sustainability Action Officer, a cross-faculty role engaging students and staff across the university with sustainability.
The choices we make as individuals impact people, society and the environment locally and across the globe. My job is to help people to understand those choices and empower them to have a positive impact on others and the planet.
Julia works for the Sustainability Action Programme, a university-wide programme working to embed sustainability across the CORE of the organisation (Curriculum, Operations, Research, and Experience). Through engaging with students and satff, the programme aims to help them develop their sustainability literacy, understanding and values. A key challenge is demonstrating that sustainability goes beyond the environment; it encompasses a balance of social, economic and environmental factors too.
Julia’s cross-faculty role involves
- Educating global citizens –enabling students and staff to play their part in changing the world for the better.
- Supporting academics across the University in embedding sustainability within the curriculum
- Developing and delivering existing and new student-staff partnership initiatives, such as Southampton Blackout, Waste Wars and Swap Shop. These initiatives see hundreds of students and staff taking action together to help make the university more sustainable.
Julia holds a degree in Biological Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a Masters in Marine Science, Policy and Law from the University of Southampton. Throughout both degrees she specialised in broader sustainability issues, such as consumer choices, and international collaboration for conservation (part of a work placement at the British Antarctic Survey). Julia previously worked in the sustainability charity and professional body sector, where her work involved developing initiatives to support recent graduates into the sustainability sector and conducting and publishing research on employment, gender equality and the role of qualifications. She was also the editor of the journal, Environmental Scientist.
Outside of work, Julia can be found writing about sustainable, creative living on her blog. She enjoys exploring new territory, whether travelling, enjoying a new novel or turning her hand to different crafts.
