Jon is a Lecturer in Ship Science and Maritime Engineering within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

His research interests are in the development of maritime autonomous systems, in particular the development of unmanned surface vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles, investigating the overall system design, systems integration, and mission behaviours.

Research interests

Principal research areas are in the field of maritime autonomous systems investigating the overall system design, systems integration, and mission behaviours. Ongoing research is in the area of unmanned surface vessels through the development of missions systems. He has previously worked with the inspection of ballast tanks using autonomous systems for the visual survey of potential structural defects, and the performance of underwater gliders. These have been funded by EU H2020, Industry and other funds.

He is responsible for L3 Harris ASV C-Cat3 uncrewed surface vessel which has considerably enhanced the capabilities of the Maritime Robotics Laboratory and is being used in research including developing greater understanding of autonomous behaviours in the maritime environment, and interdisciplinary scientific research.
