Dr Jack LT Lawrence is Research Fellow in Experimental Aeroacoustics within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Jack completed his Masters of Acoustical Engineering (MEng) degree at the University of Southampton, in 2009. After working as an acoustical consultant for a year with Aecom (Sydney, Australia), Jack returned to Southampton to begin an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) sponsored by EPSRC, Rolls-Royce and QinetiQ on the topic of installed jet aeroacoustics.

Having completed his EngD, in 2014, Jack is now coordinating several research activities within two major research projects (HARMONY and JERONIMO) and continuing his research into installed jet noise. Jack is also co-supervising two PhD students and two undergraduate individual projects with Professor Rod Self.

Research interests

Jack is currently involved in coordinating and conducting research within two aircraft noise themed projects:

  1. HARMONY (wHole AiRcraft Multidisciplinary nOise desigN sYstem) is a UK TSB funded project designed to ensure that the major UK aerospace organisations are in a position to win a major part of the post-2020 civil aircraft market. Within this project, Jack is designing and commissioning a new wind tunnel for the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre's anechoic Doak Laboratory for future coaxial jet noise research applications.
  2. JERONIMO (JEt noise of high bypass RatiO eNgines: Installation, advanced Modelling and mitigation) is an EU Framework 7 funded project, which aims to understand the physical mechanisms behind installed jet-wing interaction noise from ultra high bypass ratio engines (i.e. BPR > 12). As well as this, a key objective is to develop and validate engine jet noise characterisation and prediction processes based on anechoic wind-tunnel tests and numerical simulations.
