Dr Kirsten Revell is a Visiting Researcher within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
A passionate advocate for user-centered design. I am interested in applying human factors to design across domains, at a range of levels and from a variety of perspectives. I endorse a mixed method approach to research. Currently working on the Future Flight Deck project focused on evaluating how technology could enable changes not only to the design of the flight deck cockpit, but also the tasks and functions undertaken by pilots, and configurations of pilot crewing (e.g. single pilot operations). From 1st April I will embark on a new challenge, looking at the design of human interactions with Autonomous vehicles, as part of the Hi:DAV project, funded by Jaguar Land Rover and EPSRC.
Previous work has focused on changing energy consuming behaviour in the home through interface design, analyzing the usability of digital command and control battle-space management systems, proposing metaphorical designs for military systems, and communicating use of ergonomic principles in the design of the Sky remote control for an exhibition at the Design Museum, and measuring the affordances of kitchen gadgets.
