Mahmoud is Research Fellow in hydraulics at the University of Southampton.

Mahmoud received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, heat and fluids, and the M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering and energy conversion from the University of Kashan, Iran, in 2013 and 2015, respectively. During his master, he focused on CFD modelling of nanofluid heat transfer in cavities and microchannels, and developing natural stabilization for Galerkin meshless method in convection-diffusion problems. In November 2017, he pursued his PhD at the University of Warwick to investigate molecular communication in turbulent fluid environments. He applied the concept of Shannon capacity in the context of modulated information in turbulent chemical plumes. He also applied and interpreted the classic concept of the Richardson cascade in the context of the molecular communication. It has wide applications in connection with applications such as localisation of plume source, pheromones communication, and chemical plume detection. In November 2020, he joined the University of Southampton’s water engineering group as a Research Fellow. Currently, he is working on optimising the design of algae raceway ponds in order to improve the mixing processes and efficiency of these systems. Mixing within the raceway plays a central role in the efficiency of the system, by preventing algae from settling onto the bottom of the raceway, by ensuring appropriate levels of exposure to sunlight and nutrients and by maximising gas diffusion and exchange between the raceway and the atmosphere. He employs a combination of laboratory experimentations (Particle Image Velocimetry-PIV) and CFD simulations (OpenFOAM) for his analysis.
