Dr Michal Kalkowski PhD, MEng

Lecturer in Dynamics

Dr Michal Kalkowski is Lecturer in Dynamics within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Michal received his MEng in Control Engineering and Robotics from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow (Poland) in 2010. Shortly after, he embarked on a PhD in Sound and Vibration programme at the University of Southampton, investigating removing surface accretions with structural waves. He was awarded the PhD degree in early 2015 while already working on his first post-doctoral appointment at the ISVR (active control of vibration). After further two years in the Assessing the Underworld project, he moved to the NDE Group at Imperial College London in late 2017 to work on modelling, imaging and characterisation of complex structured materials. He returned to ISVR as a lecturer in September 2021.

Research interests

Michal works primarily in non-destructive testing and imaging. He is using vibration and waves to determine the shape, composition and condition of structures. The applications of interest include complex welds, coarse-grained alloys, multi-layer plates, pipes and underground space and many others.

Michal is a keen modeller, developing both analytical and numerical models for wave propagation in various media.  He works across all frequency regimes, formulating and solving inverse problems.  In the longer term, he aims at merging the versatility of fundamental physical models with data-based predictions to deliver robust monitoring and inspection solutions.
