Dr Mengyan Nie is a Visiting Research Fellow within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Mengyan joined us in January 2008 as a Post Doctoral Researcher and is involved in the project Microfluidic Devices for Structural Health Monitoring and Integrity. His main research interests are microfluidics and micro total analysis system, electrochemical sensing techniques, surface modification, bionanotechnology, molecular modelling and high-throught analysis. Mengyan obtained both his BSc and MSc in Analytical Chemistry from Lanzhou University, China, and was awarded PhD degree in Chromatography from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Before joining the Surface Engineering and Tribology group in the School of Engineering Sciences, he had worked in Doshisha University in Japan, Heidelberg University in Germany, and Reading University and Cambridge University in UK.

Research interests

  • Corrosion and structural health monitoring
  • Microfluidics and micro total analysis systems
  • Self-assembled monolayers on engineering materials
  • Applications of electrochemical techniques in corrosion
  • Bio-nanotechnology, molecular modelling and high throughput analysis

Research group

national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS)

Research project(s)

Green Tribology

Tribology is the study of friction, lubrication and wear. Decreasing friction by any means always leads to welcome reductions in fuel and energy consumption, with a corresponding decrease in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
