Dr Ping Lu is a Research Fellow within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Ping obtained her BSc in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Beijing Institute of Technology (China) in 2011. She then undertook a MSc study in University of Southampton, and obtained a degree with Distinction in Advanced Mechanical Engineering.  Followed this she carried out her PhD at the national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton.

Currently Ping is working on the EPSRC project ‘Early detection of contact distress for enhanced performance monitoring and predictive inspection of machines’. Prior to her appointment at the University of Southampton, Ping has held post-doctoral research positions at the University of Sheffield investigating the tribological properties of laser clad rail or rail components.

Structured Surfaces for Tribological Applications

Using structured surface rather than smooth surface to decrease friction is at variance with the classical tribology theories. However, it really happened and has been proved by worldwide researchers.
