Dr Dylan Menzies is Senior Research Fellow within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Dylan Menzies is a Senior Research Fellow in the Acoustics Group working on the EPSRC project 'S3A: Future Spatial Audio for an Immersive Listener Experience at Home'.

After graduating in mathematics from Cambridge University, he moved to the University of York to complete an MSc then DPhil in the electronics department, focusing on audio technology. Following this, he worked on audio for a new physics simulation company, and then Sony Oxford Professional Audio. He returned to academia as a researcher in astrophysics at the University of Notre Dame, USA. After several years as a Senior Lecturer in audio at De Montfort University, UK he joined the S3A project at Southampton.

Research interests

Dylan’s research interests include spatial audio – sound field synthesis, binaural synthesis, psychoacoustic optimization; and interactive synthesis of sound, both of natural objects and musical instruments.

Personal electronic technologies are currently converging rapidly towards systems providing advanced augmented and virtual visualization. These have many professional and consumer applications, and provide opportunities for developing new audio technologies, particularly related to interaction in the immediate environment.
