Dr Sophie Day is Research Fellow - Coastal Engineering within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

I have worked as a researcher in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, within the Energy and Climate Change Group, for many years. I have also worked as a consultant for Atkins Ltd., and am now a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment at Southampton University. I am presently editing a book alongside Professor Robert Nicholls entitled, ‘Broadscale Coastal Simulation: New techniques to understand and manage shorelines in the new millennium. This is due to be published by Springer in 2014.

Research interests

My research concerns the challenges associated with adaptation to long-term coastal change in the UK and abroad in the context of future climate change. I pay particular attention to the issue of broad stakeholder engagement in the future planning of complex issues. For example on coasts, where the nature and degree of change is uncertain and to some extent contingent upon past and future planning decisions. Earlier research concerned the communication of climate change and public engagement.
