Dr Sigrid Kusch-Brandt is a Visiting Research Fellow within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Dr Kusch-Brandt’s work aims to contribute to more sustainable management of environmental resources, including through a more effective integration of circular economy principles into the management of wastes. She has a specific interest in the valorisation of biogenic resources.

Sigrid studied environmental engineering in Germany and France, and received her doctoral degree from the University of Hohenheim in 2007 after conducting both laboratory-scale and full-scale research on anaerobic digestion for biogas production from solid biomasses. Her experience stems primarily from positions with several academic institutions, and in addition from projects on a freelance basis. From 2011 to 2012, she held the temporary position of substitute professor for waste management at Technical University of Dresden. In 2014, she became visiting professor for ‘Sustainable and Renewable Resources’ at the University of Padua. She also works as consultant for organisations such as UNEP and the European Commission. She is a member of the Bioenergy and Organic Resources Research Group at the University of Southampton since 2009.

Dr Kusch-Brandt has published more than 100 scientific contributions, has served as guest editor for several international journals, and frequently serves as reviewer for publications. The Best Reviewer Award of the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association recognized the outstanding quality of one of her reviews and she was also voted SAGE Excellent Reviewer by Waste Management and Research. She serves as Section Editor Environmental Sciences for the journal Science Progress and as Editorial Board Member for Waste Management and Research. She frequently serves as evaluator of research proposals for different funding programmes. Dr Kusch-Brandt is a Future Earth Fellow.
