Dr Sarah Worsfold is a Speech and Language Therapist within the Auditory Implant Service in Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton
My research and clinical management work are aimed at maximising an individual’s access to sound around them and maximise their educational, social and employment potential.
Speech and Language Therapist at the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service (USAIS), an enterprise unit in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment. USAIS provides specialised clinical services to people from around the South of England who need a cochlear implant, other types of surgical hearing prostheses, or specialist services in Auditory Processing Disorder and other specialised forms of hearing assessment. Prior to her current position, she held clinical, management and research roles in the area of audiology in Southampton and was most recently Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton. She graduated with a 2:1 honours degree in Politics and Economics from Keele University College London in 1978 and from De Montfort University in 1981 with a distinction in Speech and Language Therapy which has resulted in a career-long interest in the effects of deafness on communication. She graduated with a PhD in 2012, from the University of Southampton and has been involved since 2004 in a Welcome Trust funded longitudinal study on language, reading and other outcomes in children who have/not been exposed to Universal Newborn Hearing Screening. Other areas of interest include changes in adult communication and access to hearing services following auditory implantation.
