Dr Spencer Court is a Senior Enterprise Fellow and of nC2, Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
nC2 is a business unit within the faculty providing industry with direct access to the facilities and staff through consultancy and applied research services.
Corrosion Control
Spencer is carrying out corrosion testing and analysis within the nC2 group and is responsible for conducting accelerated corrosion testing regimes and exposure testing in accordance with recognized standards. He is currently investigating the corrosion resistance performance of several types of REACH-compliant candidate coating schemes for military equipment.
Experience
Spencer gained both of his degrees from the University of Portsmouth, BSc (hons) Applied Chemistry followed by a doctorate in Corrosion, His thesis “Characterisation of Electroless Nickel” was sponsored by OMG Fidelity. Electrochemical techniques were used to determine the corrosion resistance and porosity of two industrial electroless nickel coatings on aluminium and the effects of the zincating pre-treatment of aluminium prior to electroless nickel plating. The effects of bath stabilisers on plating parameters and corrosion resistance was also investigated.
Spencer completed his PhD in 2001 and has gained experience during the last 15 years as a Cathodic Protection Engineer where roles have included quality assurance of sacrificial anodes using electrochemical testing and spectrographic analysis as well as designing impressed current and sacrificial systems in the marine and oil and gas industries. Prior to Joining nC2 Spencer worked for Saipem Ltd where he was responsible for designing and installing cathodic protection systems for subsea and onshore structures based in the North Sea, South America and Asia.
