Dr Timothy Kamps is a Doctoral Prize Research Fellow within the national Centre for Advanced Tribology in Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Timothy is currently researching scuffing performance of DLC coatings for automotive applications and online condition monitoring technologies for lubricated contacts. His PhD investigating scuffing failure of cast irons was awarded by the University of Southampton in 2018. He was awarded the Tribology Trust Bronze Medal for this research and received the Institute of Physics prize for innovation in tribology in 2017. Timothy attained his MEng degree in mechanical engineering with an automotive theme from the University of Southampton in 2012.

Scuffing in piston assembly and liner of fired combustion engines

Scuffing in automotive engines has increased in both frequency and severity which has led industry to undertake development of a new heavy duty (HD) engine test that will assess the scuff resistance of lubricants. This is planned to be part of a scuffing test standard to be introduced in January 2016. This program of work aims to understand the fundamental causes and events leading to piston ring and liner scuffing by developing new and novel bench test capabilities that will contribute to the set of tests developed for the scuffing test standard.
