Dr Timothy Waters is Associate Professor within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Current Position

Tim Waters is Associate Professor at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton. His research interests relate to vibration control and applications of vibration, particularly at ultrasonic frequencies, for structural health monitoring of aging aircraft and removal of accretions, e.g. in-flight wing de-icing. He runs short courses for industry in vibration related topics.

Career History

Tim Waters studied Mathematics at the University of Bristol. On graduation, he spent three years at British Aerospace (Airbus) Ltd where he worked in aerodynamic and elastic modelling of aircraft structures for flutter prediction. He completed his PhD at the University of Bristol, funded by British Aerospace, to research new methods for validating finite element models as used for predicting aircraft wing vibration. He joined the ISVR in 1998, initially as a research fellow and consulting engineer. He is currently an associate professor of vibration engineering and has a broad range of research interests in both the mitigation and exploitation of structural vibration.

He has co-authored over 90 international journal and conference articles, a book chapter on vibration testing, and a patent.

 

Research interests

Dr Waters is interested in both the reduction of vibration and its exploitation, particularly for monitoring purposes. His specific research interests include:

  • Modelling wave propagation in structures such as aircraft and piping systems
  • Detection and removal of accreted material on structures using vibration
  • Mitigation of vibration, particularly in road vehicles and drones
  • Ultra low frequency vibration isolation using snap-through and other nonlinear stiffness mechanisms
  • Detection of cracks and crack growth in aging structures, e.g. from their ultrasonic acoustic emissions
  • Identification of mechanical joints in structures using model updating techniques

Dr Waters has supervised 17 PhD students to completion.

Current PhD projects include:

  • Protection of museum objects from shock and vibration (in collaboration with The British Museum)
  • Removal of ice from aircraft wings using guided waves (in collaboration with Ultra Electronics)
  • Removal of biofouling from water pipes using guided waves

Recently completed projects include:

  • Condition monitoring of mooring chains using ultrasonic guided waves (in collaboration with TWI)
  • Energy harvesting automotive dampers featuring mechanical motion rectification.
  • Structural health monitoring of reinforced concrete beams.
