Dr William Batten is Visiting Research Fellow within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

William Batten is a Research Fellow at the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment. His key research areas are in both experimental and computation fluid dynamics. He joined the school in January 2002 after completing his PhD on small clearance Taylor-Couette flows with the School of Engineering Sciences. His PhD work involved CFD simulations using CFX and the development of a new test rig. (view details) Since working for the school, William Batten has been an active member of the sustainable energy research group. Most of his work has been involved in understanding the physical flow around tidal energy devices. The studies were carried out over 3 years on an EPSRC research project. The experimental results have been crucial in validating company software and the developed test rig formed a key part of the renewable energy exhibition at the EPSRC's international review of engineering at the EXCEL centre. The test rig has also been used for other company testing. In addition to the above, he gained considerable knowledge from the development of blade element momentum numerical modelling of turbines, including the design, development and validation of a new in-house code. (view details) William Batten has also worked on the economics and socio-economics of both wave and tidal energy devices, through involvement in a FP6 project "Coordinated Action on Ocean Energy." (view details) Based on William Batten's experimental fluid dynamics experience, he is now working on an EPSRC project on multi-mode response of a cylinder undergoing simultaneous vortex-induced and wake-induced vibrations. This work will require development of instrumentation for test rigs and precise experiments. (viewr details) ---
